Networked lighting control systems offer amazing potential not only to integrate building control but also control of entire campuses, notably college and university campuses. At a single workstation, facility operators can fine‐tune, measure, monitor, and maintain their lighting system while generating data that can be used to improve operational efficiency along with the occupant experience and safety. In this presentation we explore how networked lighting control systems can form the foundation of a modest Internet of Things solution for college and university campuses. This session also provides case studies as examples of different approaches based on different needs.

Learning Objectives
At the end of this course, attendees will be able to:

  • Select a level of networked lighting control appropriate for various campus needs
  • Apply networked lighting control to optimize energy cost savings
  • Apply networked lighting control to monitor and maintain the lighting system for safety
  • Apply networked lighting control to generate data that can be used to enhance operational efficiencies and the occupant experience

Presenters
Gary Meshberg, LEED AP, LC, CLCP, IES is vice chair of the Lighting Controls Association and director of industry and market engagement for OSRAM. A 31-year industry veteran, he previously served as director of marketing, VP of sales and specification business manager for major lighting manufacturers. He chairs the IES Lighting Commissioning Committee, previously served as past education chair for the Dallas Section, and founded and served as chair of the Home Lighting Control Alliance.

Brian Dykstra is an Electrical Engineer and Project Manager for the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is a 31 year veteran of lighting design and implementer of energy reduction/optimization measures for various business fields including Architecture/Engineering, Major Manufacturing and Healthcare Facilities. He is currently a lead engineer on the UNMC Strategic Energy Group working on projects over the campus’s 4 million square feet of Research and Healthcare space.

Brian Haines is the VP of Strategy with FM Systems, where he focuses on innovative facility management solutions that are both employee-centric and sustainable. He is a Navy veteran and has worked in several roles in the building industry over the past 28 years.
